Default Crankshaft end play

Hi there guys,

I have a question about the crank thrust play on an 01 5.3L. How much is too much end play? I took the engine sown to the long block to reseal and when I started checking things out I realized that the end play seemed excessive. I used my feeler gauge to measure the distance and I go .018 on both sides of the main cap. This engine has about 135k on it, it is a temporary engine for a 69 Chevelle build so I can drive the car while I build a 396 for it.

Will I be ok running this much end play? Because if I have to do a rebuild this, I might as well get started on the 396 build.

Use a dial indicator set up on your crank flange and back of the block somewhere then use a 2 large pry bars and gently pry/apply pressure to the counter weights forward, then do it towards the rear while watching the dial, it's a lot more accurate than feeler gauges. About .007-8 is perfect, .018 is too much.

Feeler gauge at the thrust bearing cap not the way to do it? I will try that, thanks. Is .007-.008 is normal wear for 135K on these engines?

No, if it was used hard and possibly someone rode the clutch a lot you would expect wear on the thrust bearing. Is .018 alot? yes it is. Will it last? If anyone could know the future we would all be rich! I would probably pull the pan and visually inspect it, if it doesn't look hot-blue or torn up I'd run it.

It could be worn for alot of different reasons.

Unfortunately @.018 you will have a lot of vibration and if you are using a manual transmission it will feel even worse.

Thanks guys. I put a dial indicator on the crank tonight. I don't know how I got .018 with the gauge. I indicator had me at .012. Bearing looked good, so I am running it. Scared me a little yesterday when i thought my engine was junk. Lol, that's why I reached out. Thanks again for the input guys.

Cheers!
