Default stock 243 heads, question

There are some sets of 243 heads that i'd like to replace my 241s with. Is milling neccesary? or can I just get some oem replacement head gaskets and put them on?

You can basically just put them on as is, but without milling and whatnot it's not worth the trouble IMO.

even with the better flow difference it wouldn't be worth it? at only 4-500 bucks?

If you compare stock to stock you're looking at maybe 15-20 hp. To me that's not worth it when there's so much more to be had, but I can't speak for others of course. If you don't mind all the labor involved then $400 for 15 hp doesn't sound so bad I guess

yea I suppose I should have been more specific. the build for this car is pretty much slowly gaining power each year. If I have to take it apart due to something I dont like, i will, no biggy.
so at this point, that small 15-20 hp is worth it to me. ive got the gm hotcam, which I've heard is a pretty decent combo to hit 400 with awesome driveability.

and I like the second opinion on the heads. i see them everywhere ranging from 300-700bucks

Gotcha. I guess another way to look at it is if you can get a great deal on some 243's right now, then when money permits have them worked over later on, then it looks to be a good overall investment. Just a thought

awesome. well i'll try this out and see what I can get out of the combo and post it on here. i've read some guy hit 413hp/400something tq with my combo/bolt ons.
then go from there with porting/bigger cam etc.
got any 'trusted' head sellers on the net? seems like ebay has a few cheap used sets

Why not do the work once and go with a bigger cam now?

well i'll be putting alot more time into it in the future, but im in the middle of moving right now and i'd like to install something quick and get a tune before the move. i'm definitely going to go bigger in the future when I can get my car settled into a garage for a while.

im not looking for a certain number but i'd like to know my car was over 400 with small heads and cam/bolt ons. gm hotcam has done me good so far

Ok, I was thinking that you still had to install your hot cam

I would at least get a clean up cut to make sure the deck surface is flat and smooth. If you measure your PTV, you can get an idea how much you can safely mill.

Take .012-.018 off, end up at around 61-62 cc's, have a "good" multi angle valve job and pick up 20 cfm over the old heads or so at every lift. if you could afford a mild pocket porting/bowl blending you'll notice a good difference.
