Default Salvage yard Lq9

Hello everybody,

Currently looking to buy a Lq9 out of a 03 Silverado SS, Yard says it runs good and had 141k miles.

Anything i should specifically check/change before installing?

Was planning on doing a rebuild w/heads and cam but situation changed preventing that.

Default Oil Fliter Inspection

MY FIRST CALL, "cut", open, inspect the internal media of the oil filter.

This is EASY, if you want my method, I will provide more detail ?

Definitely cut the filter open and check for any metal in the filter material. Might as well pull the pan off and clean it out/inspect the bottom end while its not in a vehicle since it will be accessible and oil pan gaskets are pretty cheap. Pull valve covers and check for any broken springs or lose/broken rockers and replace the vc gaskets while youve got those off. Before you even buy the thing I'd pull all the plugs out of it and make sure the motor will turn over freely by hand. I bought an LQ4 with supposedly "lower mileage" from a salvage yard and it turned into a complete rebuild with machine work because it ended up being in pretty rough shape. Hopefully the yard you're getting yours from is more truthful than the one I had experience with.

One more thing, go ahead and inspect the knock sensors as well while its out and easy to pull the intake on and off. If theyve never been changed or "sealed" theyre probably rusted out and the holes in the valley cover full of water and corrosion. Not something thats difficult to do once its in the vehicle youre going to put it in but might as well get it out of the way while its out and pick up some new intake gaskets as well. If its easier to do while the motor is on a stand, do it.

Thanks!,

I knew about checking the oil filter and making sure it turns over by hand, would've never guessed to check the springs and rockers.
