You need to be more specific than that. What budget? What's already done? You posted this in the Internals section so I assume you want to ask about heads/cams/rotating assemblies, right?

An S10 is very light. A 5.3 kept stock with maybe a stalled converter will make for a very fun truck. I've got a LS2 in mine and I had to go to 2.73 gears to gain traction.

I would tell you to save the money on the 383 and put it towards getting that motor in there.

After it fits and is running, you can much more easily swap in a 383 bottom end, and that will be your only budget item.

Like mentioned above more information on your goals and what you currently have will help us out a lot towards recommending the right upgrades.

Saying "What will work well with my engine" when talking about an engine family with one of the most prolific aftermarkets ever is about the most vague question you can possibly ask.

You might as well say "I Bought a house, what can I do now?"

I just put a 5.3 in my 2000 Extreme. I went with a very mild set up. Milled 243's, Comp 208/212 cam, TBSS intake, headers with 3 1/2 exhaust, 4l60 w/3200 stall

In the automotive world, there is no "best'. If there was, there would only be 1 available camshaft, 1 aftermarket head, 1 intake, etc.

You haven't said anything about the truck or the engine that would give us any idea.

Do you want it to be a:
Drag Only
Weekend warrior
Road Race
Autocross
Street Only
Offroad
Tow truck
Parts Hauler

Do you want it to run on:
Gasoline
87 only
83 only
Methanol
E85
Ethanol
AV Gas
Solid O2

Do you want:
High compression
Low compression
Stock heads
Aftermarket heads
6 bolt heads
4 bolt heads
Iron heads
Aluminum heads
Small valves
Large valves
Stock exhaust manifolds
Long tubes
Mid-length headers
Stock intake
Plastic intake
Aluminum intake
Stock cam
Huge cam
Solid roller
Hydraulic cam
Stock idle
Rough idle
Good MPG
Poor MPG.

Dude seriously, we can't read your mind. We have absolutely zero idea what you want to do with the truck. We don't have a clue. You haven't said if you want stock HP, 10000000 HP, a big cam or a stock idle, turbos, nitrous.

We don't know if you're on a high school kids budget or if you own Exxon.

The fact that he also has a blazer means nothing. Other than vehicle weight, the type of car/truck that the engine is in has pretty much nothing to do with whats done to it.

My swap was into a 2000 isuzu hombre. Thought I could help because it's a 2000 and on the same frame, but since it's an isuzu, guess I can't help. Nevermind.

This is a good setup in a S10. I shoulda mentioned it's usually easier to run the 4L60, because it'll work with a standard ECU with very little effort

If you don't want to race why run the TH400? No lockup and only 3 speed. I'd run the 4L60 for what you want. It's more than enough for a mild street build in a light vehicle. 5.3/4l60 with a mild cam and Circle D budget 3200 stall will be super fun.

+1 Yup! This is what I've been saying. Keep it simple. Spend your money getting it into the truck and running. Light mods. If you want more later, it's much easier.

Most LS10 swaps never get completed. Get it in and get it running. Modding is easy after that, cause you've got all the **** to line up. A stock 4.8 in a S10 will run like a cyclone.

"A stock 4.8 in a S10 will run like a cyclone."

Without a doubt! Mine is a total handful...nearly crapped myself Saturday. It was cold (20-30s) and a 5th gen SS ran me down on the interstate and paced me doing about 72mph so I waited until he hit it and gave it the beans...downshifted, blew the tires off, hit a solid 45 degree angle in the left lane, passed him, rode it out til it lined back out. He and I both were probably wondering what hit us...hahaha. I know I had to check my drawers...cold air=more HP and hard tires...never going to run this thing on the street again. It was already impossible to hook on street tires below 60mph.

I laughed out loud at this, and all my office mates looked at me funny On my S10, it's the same thing. I geared it with 2.73's to DE-torque it some AND I put 30" tires on it. It's my daughter's daily driver, and she is always telling me about the latest mustang she beat. One of my favorite lines from her stories is

"It was way better at the second light, cause he expected it, and I still beat him. I don't know is he was more shocked he got beat twice by an S10 or that it was a girl's truck"

I had some people scold me for not running 4.10s or 4.56s over the 3.73s (we only have 1000ft tracks local) and I said "man I want to hook...no way I would hook with those gears"

What was the stall speed of the converter in that trans? I'm trying to avoid the same thing.
