Default 6.0 Freeze plug advice

Need some input on an issue that I've created for myself. I'm stripping my 6.0 to get it ready to take to the machine shop. I didn't have a 17mm Allen to remove the brass freeze plug but....

I tried to use a 17mm bolt head with two nuts on with no luck. After reading on the inter web and talking to a shop who said that they can drill them out I got the bright idea to do just that! I did get it out but on one of my passes with the drill I took the threads down to the base metal, hopefully you can see it in the pic.

Have I royal screwed up here? What are the chances of this thing leaking? Can it be drilled out and a press in plug be installed?

I live in coastal South Carolina, it doesn't get that cold here. So I don't think it's imparitive to have the freeze plug in this climate.

Thx!

That stinks but I can completely see myself doing the same thing.

FYI, AutoZone carries a set of 3 large hex bits for about $10-$12 and one is 17mm.

I would take it by a machine shop and ask them..proper way to fix is likely weld it up, tap it back out. That being said, you do have a little thread left at the bottom. That's coolant behind that plug so you could probably get away with RTV there and under the head of the plug...for a while. If you don't have access to a tap that big(I know I don't), I would be looking for an old or even new spare plug, stripping it of all sealant, and seeing if I could get it threaded in and back out to sort of validate what you have there. I'd try to use a pick of some sort to do whatever straightening of those threads first.

Let me leave you with another vote for competent machine shop. If they are willing to do it, my Spidey sense is telling me it might only be a hundred bucks or so.

$100 BUCKS!! I'll never learn!! I knew as I was drilling that I should stop while I was ahead!

I'll take it to the machine shop and are what they say.

They can weld it and re-tap the threads. Next time just give the block with the plugs in and let them do it.
