Default Cam selection for truck

Okay guys here's a question that's been sort of confusing for me and a buddy of mine. He has a 2001 Silverado lifted 4" with 33's on 20x12 moto metals. It's a 1500 with the 5.3, he had the tranny and rearend rebuilt already but he just spun a main bearing. We're gonna pull the motor here soon and swap in a different 5.3 but he wants to put a cam package in it along with a converter. Now I know everything that we need to replace, that's not a problem, choosing the cam is our problem. He wants something that lopes pretty hard, but he also doesn't want to send his mpg down the drain. Now the question we have, is there a cam that lopes, but can use a somewhat smaller converter to save him on the fuel mileage? I don't think he wants to go over a 3000stall. Thanks for the help in advanced!

I don't think he really cares about power gains, he's more into the sound/chop of the bigger cams.

It has 33" tires 12" wide and he is worrying about fuel mileage? It is really odd that he has a main spun. Anyhow, as far as a cam selection goes, I would just pay the $25 at the Guerragroup.com and have one spec'd. A 3k stall will take care of plenty of cam. You may not sacrifice any MPG. There is a thread here somewhere that has a truck with a cam swap that gained everywhere including MPG. It sounds pretty stanky as well.

I'll have to search for that thread! But Yeah, he actually gets pretty decent gas mileage out of it, much better than my Silverado with 37's lol! I was thinking a small cam with just a low Lsa would get the job done but. I'm not honestly sure what happened with the motor, it has close to 220k on it and it started knocking then lost oil pressure, so we will have to see when we pull it.

Anyone else have any input? Would the 220/220 with a low lsa get what he's after?

Go for a drop in truck cam, they have lower duration but still give a little chop. They are also built for the low end grunt a heavy vehicle needs. Most cams around the 220/220 and bigger will be great for top end but drop off low end and be less efficient at low rpm causing more bad MPG and a loss of power where you will be driving the most in a truck.

Also I would stay around a 2500 rpm or so stall, it is definitely more fun with a 3k or so but in that heavy truck a lot of your mpg will be lost taking off with that slippery stall.

Ask the tuner to bring in the lockup earlier to help keep some mpg
