Default ring gap mystery

So I picked up a 120k mile gen3 5.3 from a wrecked truck.
Doing a low buck build nothing new. I've done other builds but this is a first for me as far as ring gap.
pulIed the pistons rods etc. to inspect and well gap the rings.
And to my suprise and confusion the top ring and second ring are both .028 on all cylinders.
My question is has anyone heard of such a thing on a stock motor and ring gap?
