Cam reccomendations
Hey, been doing a little research but cant quite decide what cam i should get. Im going to be putting on ported 799 heads at some point but i need a cam to go with it, would appreciate you guys sharing experiences youve had with these heads and different cams, thanks!
I've had two with ported 243s (same as the 799s). But I also have a ported FAST 102, Kooks 1-7/8" headers, True Duals, 11:1 CR, and a 4000 stall.
First was a 234/242 111... it drove okay, screamed up top, and generally was a bit much in traffic. I had very low idle vacuum and it would buck and surge when coasting. But with a big stall or a lot of gear and compression, it would run hard. It had 16 degrees of overlap.
Second, was the 227/244 115 supercharger cam. It's a smaller cam in terms of overlap and drives very nearly like stock, still pulls hard uptop, and is more pleasurable in traffic. It has more vacuum for brakes and the like and has little to no surge. It was around 6 degrees of overlap.
What do you plan to do? What other mods do you have? What gearing? Auto/M6? Headers? All of that info will help.
If you want a drag car, look for something closer to the top cam. Actually, if I were doing a drag car NA with a SBE, I'd do a 236/248 110+3. The 12 degree split seems to work the best with ported stock cathedral ports and carry power up top. The valve events of that cam would make it very fast but it has a lot of overlap. It wouldn't be the best on the street.
If you want something fun on the street, a 227/234 113+2 would be an excellent all around cam.

My 99 TA has a xer 224/224 .581 lift on 113 lsa
Very streetable...i have 125,000+ miles on it and the TEA heads. Driven in heavy traffic and snow even. Six speed car with 410s..great bottom end torque...380+ at wheels under 4000 ram IIRC
Would consider 227/235 about biggest best street driver can for car like mine

Running Livernois Motorsports stg 3 LS6 heads, TSP 233/239, 4000 stall, TSP 17/8 headers, ory, corsa catback.
My cam is about the biggest cam i would run. Can easily daily drive it.
Other cams i would suggest is
TSP 228R
TSP Torquer 2 232/234
Speed Inc SI5 231/237..
Just remeber keep your setup simple man. Dont over complicate your setup with this motor. Everything has been done to these cars already.
