Default Lifter Size

Putting in a new cam in my 383 stroked motor and want to know if I should get a bigger lifter.

The cam specs are 612/612 - 242/244 - 113LSA

Will the LS7 lifter suffice or should I go with a Comp R or something comparable?

Chad

Cam specs alone aren't enough to determine what kind of lifter you need. You probably want to talk to whomever ground your cam and see what they have to say. It has a lot to do with the ramp rates of your cam, how heavy the rest of he valvetrain parts are, and what you plan to use the engine for.

KCS is right, hard to determine what is needed with the info given. Max RPM, Spring Pressures, Ramp Rates, and so on will need to be determined before a suitable lifter can be recommended.

I would not use LS7 lifters. Johnson 2110 if you want a good drop in.

They aren't "bigger" - the LS7 and the Morels and Johnsons are all .842" lifter bodies. The Johnson and GM stuff have .700" wheels and the Morels have .750" wheels.

If you want to go to a bigger lifter, like a .904" Morel or Jesel... it's way overkill for your cam and would require your lifter bores to be machined to accept them. Those are for guys running stupid aggressive race motors with solid rollers and huge spring pressures.

The Johnson lifters can withstand a ton of spring pressure. It's what I run. They are awesome.

I'd also look at the 2110s if your budget allows. If not, the Morel 5315s are about $200 and are a significant upgrade over the LS7s.

With that said, I'd run a link-bar over a drop-in replacement. No chance of turning the lifter. But they are more costly. You are in the $500+ range for those. Morel has the 5290s, but they really aren't great. I'd do the 5206 from Morel or the 2116LSR from Johnson. The Johnsons are a little cheaper but excellent. They are also slow-leakdown lifters which aid in high RPM performance by keeping the lifter pumped up, acting as if it were a solid.

Johnson also has the short-travel stuff which works even more like a solid lifter. It is a significant upgrade in cost, however. If you plan to run FI down the road, it's the best way to go. Especially with pin oilers on the axle...

Valvetrain is one area I would not skimp.
