Oil pump keeps failing

Are you centering the pump on the drive cog before tightening it up?

Have you checked the crank snout for runout? Would take some serious pressure to break parts like that. Possibly an off center cam sprocket to. Did you roll motor over by hand after assembly to see if it spun freely? I'd first leave timing set off, pull all rockers so valves are shut, pull the spark plugs and have someone crank motor over while I watched the crank snout for runout/wobble. If you have a dial indicator great throw her on. If that looks good I'd assemble the timing set leaving front cover off, rotate motor over 2 full turns in 1/4 turn increments checking the slack in the timing chain each time. If chain ends up getting tighter in spots then your problems in the cam or cam sprocket. Was this a fresh rebuild?

Well you do not see that to often. Only thing I can think of is the Pump didn't have adequate clearance on the crank sprocket, or the gears inside the pump were jammed up if it failed on initial start up.
Was the crank timing sprocket pressed on all the way? If it wasn't, it could see it cracking the oil pump during torquing of the bolts.

There is something very basic going wrong here. Old Geezer might have hit upon it a few posts above. The timing sprocket/oil pump drive "cog" might have been broken during/right after installation, taking the pump out with it upon startup. You might want to consult a manual before attempting the next install.
