Default Removing sludge?

My LQ4 I picked up a couple months back has a crap load of dry sludge in the lifter trays and I'm sure it's made it's way into other places. How do you clean the block internally? There is still minor crosshatching and the tols of the pistons don't have much carbon buildup. A look at the plugs it came with show they're in normal condition. Is this just from a lack of maintenance and just sitting for years?

Can I just clean up the sludge and put in a new oil pump and lifters? Or a rering and bearings is recommended ?

Do you plan on tearing the engine down to just the block? If so, you can use a quality engine degreaser, such as Oil Eater, mix with water and scrub away with a toothbrush.

I was going to keep the rotating assembly and remove the rest.

If you are taking it that far it's only a little more work to strip it to the bare block, have it vatted, new core plugs, light dingle berry hone, new rings and bearings, then you are sure it is clean and good for several thousand more milews

i think that's what I'm going to end up doing, hot tank and a re-ring job w/bearings.
