Knocking/ticking after overheating

Knocking/ticking after overheating 2000 LS1 ended overheating shut it down fast but was running slightly hot a little bit before. After a good 30 minute cool down I fired it back up and there's a knocking/ticking noise. I took it to a shop they diagnosed the cooling issue but all the said about the noise was sounded like a loose heat shield. Then a Friend GM tech said he turned the engine over by hand and it stopped at a point which said bent connecting rod.
It sounds like something is slapping the exhaust up by the header.
How many different things can cause a knocking/ticking after over heating I keep hearing head gasket but what else there was no ticking before. Thanks

This would require a tear down to fix tho I imagine? To me it almost sounds like the noise is being amplified by the exhaust so I went with the first shop that said heat shield then another said bent connecting rod... Not sure if excess heat could cause exhaust manifold gasket to go?
You could easily have a bent rod and created an exhaust leak. Heat can do some really bad stuff to your engine. Without opening it up and examining the damage from the overheat, its very difficult to know the extent of your misfortune.
