LQ9 Piston to bore clearance

Default LQ9 Piston to bore clearance

Ive got an LQ9. Just wanting to rering the stock pistons and run them for the summer. Piston skirt measures 3.9975 and the bore has been honed and measures at 4.0015. I read that the max is 0.003 Is this thing going to have piston slap like crazy or is it runable for the summer? Just going to be an lq9 with with a cam and a used set of 243 truck head.

Its .004, I would say its going to be very noisy and oily.

Has anyone done this. I would really prefer to stay away from replacing and balanencing etc. Was thinking I would be able to throw so if the speed pro pistons in there. I wonder how close to stock weight etc they are

Could have your pistons coated then no problem.

Default Piston slap

I have a 5.3 that on a super tight budget at the time.. I had replaced the head gaskets on it and saw there was a very good amount of slop ...piston too cylinder wall clearance was way too much.. like I could rock it back n fourth ... It knocks every morning till warm.... I don't dare move it or drive it till it's warm... But after normal operating temperature... I've hammered this stock bottom end up too 6G quite often shifts like a Beast!! And haven't blown it yet ..knock on wood!!!!! She's a screamer and I burn no oil unless towing... The trick is JOE GIBBS LS30 OIL !! THE STUFF IS THE **** NOTHING COMPARES TO IT FOR LS MOTORS... over a year hammering this 5.3 and it still sings!!

That's a judgement call you'll have to make OP. It will run and yes you may hear some piston slap until it warms up but if it's just to get you through the summer then I say run them as is.

Send it. It's yerbasic old motor, just like about A BILLION of em are running around right now. Might be a little noisy but won't be "catastrophic" or anything like that.

Don't bother with new pistons.

I've been running over 0.0030 ptw on every single engine I've bought. Running new pistons doesn't help much. I have never noticed piston slap to be honest. I did notice after the first 1000 miles, of throwing new rings and new pistons on an old worn bore, the engine starts to eat oil. This may actually be caused by enlarged ring gap from the rings wearing.
