Hi everyone I am looking into doing a cam in my 2000 trans am. How would not doing a stall affect performance?

Depends on the cam, but doing a stall is going to help regardless

Well the bigger the cam the more a good stall is needed, but it should be plenty drivable in the meantime. You're just leaving a lot on the table performance wise in the meantime

Baby cam will be fine. Big rowdy cam will suck with factory stall. It’ll drive like **** and be a dog for the first six hundred feet of any race and just plain **** you off
Stall should be your first mod. Not a fix for the mountain stick you want everyone to hear. Zero races have been won by sound intimidation

Both a cam and a converter will require a tune. You may want to do them both at the same time to avoid getting the car tuned twice. If you can only afford one, I'd opt for the converter and a good tune. I am much more of a fan of manual transmissions, however a well tuned, stalled auto is very fun to drive. I had one years ago and loved it. The car would be in it's powerband right off the get go and on the freeway as soon as I even thought about giving it some throttle it would seamlessly already be in the right gear.

I chose to do a converter before I did my cam and let me tell you I do not regret it one single bit I went with the yank 4000ss and I would recommend it to anyone out there do not be afraid of the stall I was going to go with a 3600 at first but then read alot of the guys that went with the 3600 wish they would have went to the 4k right off the rip so thats how I made my choice along with watching some driveability videos on youtube just make sure you buy a lock up converter and dont by a cheap converter you get what you pay for!

The reason a stall is recommended with a larger cam is that it will really push on the brakes at a stop. The tuner will be raising the idle so it won't stall and it will be annoying. On top of it the cam will raise the power band higher which will make it sluggish in the low rpms.

I really think big cams are overrated unless tracking the car. Everyone is different, but but on the street useable horsepower is much more enjoyable than peak numbers. Hence the phrase "donkey dick cam"

i dont get the logic of bragging about power under the curve and all that if you end up racing someone on the street or track your staying in an rpm range where said donkey dick cam is making all its power and little said to be more enjoyable cam was done awhile ago making its power

what is the best stall with a TSP torquer V4 cam and a 4L80e? 3200 - 3400 is recommended?

Because most people don't shift it where a big *** cam should be shifted at. And if they do and they're on a stock 4L60e, it won't last long.

If all races were roll races and all transmissions were close ratio and real fast shifting that would work out, but that's not always the case. Usable power/under the curve is really kind of a tortoise and hair situation, the steady and long power band will give a broader and longer lasting pull and need less shifts, the big cam will be all in at the upper rpm range then comes the gear change, and usually with high rpm power you need short gears, so you're changing gears more and losing time there too. A car that can stay in power longer will often roll out on a car that hits a large power number quickly and shifts and repeats. The power under the curve car is usually more fun than the upper end explosive quick power too. But to each their own.

Not saying you're wrong, there are plenty of cases that it works out your way too.

A 3.08 gear in a 4l80 is going to suck. I'd definitely change that

You'll be much happier with 3.73 gears. I would still get the ss4000 and save up for the rear end.
