Default Weird smell....

The car is a 2000 Trans Am m6 with 55k miles on it. I daily my car. It has gears, headers, slp lid and egr delete.

Today I noticed the car started to smell. Like melting plastic or rubber. Also it has a winding, not grinding, but a subtle kind of rub noise at idle. I check the engine bay for smoke. No smoke. Only slight smell of something burning over by the battery. I checked the oil that was fine.

What is going on?

Is this multiple choice? If so I'm going with

D: Not enough information to answer the question.

See if you ran over a plastic bag and it's melting on the exhuast
Pull the belt and run the motor see if the noise stops. Spin the pulleys and listen and feel for bad bearings
Look and feel for wires that are melting/shorting

Report back with more info that we can help with.

You assuming this is an internal engine issue, or is this just the first forum you came across?

Back when I rode motorcycles I would always over my grass to get the bike in a garage because our cars were to close. One day after riding for about 200 miles with my friends I pulled it into the garage and got off. WOW........the hole garage started to smell like ****. I looked at the tires.. nope didn't run over and dog ****. My wife came out after hearing me saying ....*** me !!!! it stinks like burning dog **** in here, (she thought it was funny). After about 30 min. I found the dog ****. it flipped up onto the top of the header between it and the bottom of the motor. so there you go anything can get anywhere and stink. Just my insightful thoughts.

I always assume the worst. The worst I could come up with was something internal. So yes I was assuming it was. I pulled the ac belt off and ran the car and no more smell or sound. So luckily it was the ac compressor it just locked up. Which is not technically internal engine. So now this could go somewhere else.
But since I figured it out I think I am good now.

Just so ya know, internal stuff won't smell; it WILL make very expensive noises sometimes, usually after it's too late to do anything. External stuff (fluid leaks, burning belts, etc.) will smell to the sky...
