Need help with a Cam
Building an LQ4 for my Nova. Here’s what I have:
Stock bottom end dished pistons.
Just purchased some blueprint heads (LS3)
i will be running a Holley Single plane carb with a quick fuel 850. MSD for ignition.
The car currently has a TH350 with unknown converter. When I have the money I’d like to put a 200R4 in.
I was interested in a BTR stage 3 Cam. But I’m concerned about VTP clearance.
I’m leaning towards some COMP roller tip rockers. But they’re 1:8 ratio.
Please help.
Goals are 450-500 HP range.

Call Brian Tooley since it's his cam you are considering. He will give you the straight skinny on what to do AND on whether that cam is good for what you want to do.

LS1/2 Stage III Cam 231/242 .617"/.592" 112+2
Great camshaft for LS1/LS2 applications where rough idle is desired with more mid range/top end power than the stage 2 cam, will need a stall converter!
I would call BTR as mentioned above. Since the cam has .617 lift with a 1.7 rocker that would work out to ~ .650 lift with a 1.8 rocker. When talking with BTR about cam, might be worth asking if the ramp rate on this cam will work well with 1.8 rockers. Also ask about valve spring recommendations. The 1.8 rocker combination might need a little more spring than a 1.7 rocker with the cam.
Sounds like a fun motor for the Nova!

You cannot use btr springs with roller rockers.
They even have a disclaimer about it.
Our High Lift ASA cam is a great carb cam with no ptv issues. 226/236 .600/.600 110lsa even with large valve heads. Max rpm there would be 6400 or so i believe.
No need for a roller rocker. these aren't small block chevys.

Thanks for the responses. As for the valve springs, they are blueprint double springs. Nonetheless I appreciate the tip on not using roller rockers. Greatly appreciated all.

It's not that you cant use roller rockers or shouldn't, it's that the rollers add weight and if you go to them and especially if you go to 1.8's you'll need more spring to support the added weight and lift... and that the stock rockers are excellent for 98% of builds so no real need to upgrade them.

Just for clarification to the OP - they’re not 1:8 ratio, they’re 1:1.8 but people just leave off the 1: and say 1.8 just like people say 4.10 gears when the full number would be 4.10:1

They dont make their springs, so who's are they?
Their normal retainer is a chrome moly so those are "heavier" anyway.
I remember some of their reviews they like to use the Pro comp/Speedmaster stuff so be leary. Again they are throwing around the blueprint name like a shiney object. ive seen quite a few issues with them lately not on here.
Such a variable spring pressure gap doesnt make me feel too good about em either.
