Default Painting engine block

Quick question. Am i going to run into issues by painting inside where the oil pump sits? Should i remove it or let it ride?

I did the same but I removed it because I was afraid to have it flake over time and get in the oil and timing gears and things. I just taped it off and hit it with carb cleaner and wiped it off.

Ive seen it done a lot with SBC stuff. Personally, I’d hit it with some lacquer thinner and get it off, before it ends up in a lifter, pushrod, or clogging up a filter.

Not sure if you noticed this but there’s no gasket for the oil pump. Those surfaces need to be perfectly flat, clean and clear of anything and everything if the pump is expected to make a good seal and give the engine all the oil pressure and flow required. So, yes, it’s gonna be a big problem if there’s anything on that surface.

Once everything is assembled no on will ever see the block behind the timing cover. As mentioned seems like a risk of contaminating your oiling system for no good reason.

You need a good CLEAN (as in NO foreign material, like paint) mounting surface for the pump to seal correctly.

I don't think you need any paint inside and under the timing cover....any flaking would end up all over inside the enigine

Is this an iron block? Looks like it but not sure. If so, then paint ONLY the outside, and NO gasket surfaces. If aluminum, don't paint it; runs cooler without it.

You are correct! I looked at that a bunch of times and it didn't register that those surfaces were indeed clean! I would still strip the paint off the interior surfaces, however.

You can use GE Glyptol on the inside of the engine with no problem and it will improve oil drain back.FWIW

As long as the surface prep was excellent, I'd leave it alone. Paining the inside with Rustoleum was an old trick to help with oil drain back.

If you try to remove it now, you'll have to remove every speck, and the thoroughly scrub the block and clean out all the oil passages again. I know, cleaning the block is not that big of a deal. But if you don't need to......
