Power down between 5500-5800 rpm

i have a 2002 ss that under full power fall flat on it face between 5500-5800 rpm in the lower gear . Do not have a clue , why?

G Atsma 01-06-2019 12:01 AM

How is it after 5800?

Che70velle 01-06-2019 09:04 AM

You’ll prolly need to data log to see what’s going on.

I do not have the ability to do that
and to the question what it like after 5800 rpm the power come back like gang busters all the way to rev limiter over 6000

G Atsma 01-06-2019 03:15 PM

Carbureted or injected?

msystic27 01-06-2019 03:18 PM

It is fuel injected total stock 2002 SS

RockinWs6 01-06-2019 05:28 PM

Maybe time for new valve springs.

msystic27 01-06-2019 07:08 PM

There is only 12000 miles on it, there is no poping noise it is all quiet when this happens . I have complained to GM in the past about it.

RockinWs6 01-06-2019 07:14 PM

Doesn't matter how little miles are on it..........its a good bet that's your trouble. At least check them for cracks or other problems.

Springs only going flakey for a 400RPM window??? I doubt it...

msystic27 01-07-2019 01:00 PM

Thanks I will check on the vavle springs .

G Atsma 01-07-2019 01:49 PM

I don't think a hole in performance between 5500 and 5800RPM is springs. They are not going to be bad ONLY between those speeds. 5500 and above, yes, but not in just that window of engine speed. I think it's something in either the ignition or injection.

Id find a tuner that can do this for you. Your just guessing and throwing parts at it until then.

msystic27 01-07-2019 06:52 PM

That is my plan . Could you hear ignition knock at 5500-5800? I will get it tuned but I wonder if the knock sensor is picking up ignition knock and pulling timing back

Depends on exhaust and other factors. I’ve seen improperly setup valvetrain cause the knock sensors to pull timing.
I’d be more interested in the tuner logging everything to find the issues, than actually looking for more power, but why not kill two birds with one stone. Keep us posted.

msystic27 01-07-2019 07:25 PM

Will keep informed
it totally stock ( black wing air intake and filter and daul daul exhaust and 3inch exhaust pipe. Slp called it the ( 345 hp kit )

HioSSilver 01-07-2019 08:16 PM

Put a fuel filter on it and some dry gas in it.

I would also put new plugs and wires on it if they've never been replaced.

msystic27 01-07-2019 09:07 PM

Filter been changed
got spark plugs to change
does anybody know if the rev limiter work on 3/4 throttle or just full throttle?

G Atsma 01-07-2019 09:47 PM

The rev limiter works anytime you approach redline. It sees RPM, not throttle position.
