Default Performance engine coating brand reviews.....

  • Hello all, looking at getting into some performance engine coatings, and would like to hear what experiences you have had with different manufacturers. There are a number of choices, various application procedures, but all generally are claiming the same results. I’m really only interested in information on the application and durability side of things. The merits and performance gains have been covered over time.
- I’d like to hear how these coatings have held up for those that have done rebuilds

-is like to hear people’s experience with application and adhesion quality

-opinions in air dry or oven cure

-generally experiences with various manufactures

SwainTech
Techline
CeraKote
PolyDyn
Calico
Others I may be missing

I've used PolyDyn numerous times, mostly on bearings for the power adder people. I tried their skirt coating a couple times on engines where the piston to wall clearance was really loose and the customer didn't have money for new pistons. No complaints here.

Thank you, I hear PolyDyn often on this forum. Did you do the application yourself? Was it oven or air cure? Do the coating last or did you see that wore away after opening the engine. Thanks again

PolyDyn did the application, I don't think they sell DIY kits.

The bearing coatings for what I'm using them for are meant to be worn away. If I am building a shortblock to make 1000whp, I put in bearings that give me a ton of clearance without the coating, but with the coating, the clearance tightens up. When the engine sees max load, it will wear a bit of the coating away and ends up with just enough clearance to keep the engine happy.

The skirt coatings seemed to do what they were supposed to, but I never saw the engines again to see how long it lasted and never heard of any complaints. I suppose that is the point though.

haha. Yes, I guess it’s a good thing if you don’t see the piston skirts again.

Oh, thank you for that. I am looking into doing the applications myself, so I guess PolyDyn is not an option. That’s unfortunate, they are spoken highly off. Thank you for all that information, shortening the list helps. Thank you

I've used Dart (the head people) for heads. Chambers, exh ports, & valves.

Thank you for the responses. My question is directed towards the coatings themselves, more specifically coatings that can be purchased. This is effort to expand my service offerings a bit, I do some vapor honing, powder coating, electroplating, and these coatings could fit right in to that mix. I’m just looking for testimonials of those who have applied these various coatings to gauge which one to try using. I’ll ultimately try to purchase samples of all that I can, and test their ease of application. However, this will not help me learn their longer term durability or even short term durability after curing. Sorry if my question was not focused enough
