Let's talk about failed piston ring lands

What causes an LS1 ring land to fail?
How common is it on stock short blocks?

Too little ring end gap.

Pretty rare unless nitrous or a blower or some such is involved.

It's from too many sloppy builds.

Not enough ring gap, and also detonation can do it too.

It’s common on SBE with power adders, especially nitrous. Not so much in NA applications.

Will 11.6:1 compression on a stock LS1 short block create enough additional heat to make stock ring gap an issue?

I am trying to decide if keeping my short block stock is going to be safe with 60cc MMS 220 heads. The cost of new rotating assembly + block machining + assembly is more than I was anticipating.

thats really not that high of compression, a STOCK ls2 is 11:1

Probably not. That kind of heat doesn't come from compression. Stock motors aren't built so tight in that area anyway, to where they're THAT sensitive.

Ricky's is long-term detonation. That whole thing is just ate up with it. I think his crappy tune diagnosis is on the money.
