Default Hone big end of rod.... surface rust

I’ve got an ls1 that turned a bearing and destroyed 2 rods and the crank. I bought a reman crank and have extra rods but my extra rods have some surface rust. Would it be a bad idea to media blast (glass and low air pressure) the rust off and ever so lightly run a flex hone through the big end of the rod or should I look at finding 2 more rods that haven’t drawn moisture.

Post a pic so we have a better idea. I've gotten away with using some pretty gruesome stuff but it's your engine so you have to live with your eye on oil pressure/temp gauges lol

That’s what any shop would do with them, so I’d say go for it. Make sure you clean them....and everything else....very well. It can be hard sometimes to get the glass media off of parts. It has a way of imbedding from time to time.

Will scotchbrite not remove it? The problem with honing is it makes the hole bigger, and changes bearing clearance. You also risk putting taper in the rod.

I've actually used 00 steel wool, motor oil, and a little elbow grease many times over with great results

Scotchbrite and WD40.
Should clean up fine.

Depending on your definition of surface rust.

I’ll get pictures a little later today. I blasted them and took 400 grit through it by hand. One rod has some small pits you can’t really feel. The other 2 I blasted looked good.
