Refreshing an 05 LQ4 that has been sitting for about 10 years. Replacing all gaskets, giving a thorough clean and took one of the rod caps off to inspect the bearings. From what I understand the rod bolts are TTY. From the looks it is a type 1 bolt (has 3 dots and is a uniform thread about 1/3 the length of the bolt) however when I get new oem rod bolts from GM (04-05LQ4 bolts) they seem to be type 2 with the break/gap between threading and ribs. Is it ok to use the different style of rod bolt? both use the collar near the head of the bolt.
I don’t see why you couldn’t use either. Lots of guys even go with ARP. Be aware however that either way you go, if you change the torque value of the fastener (clamping force), it will distort the rod and affect bearing clearance. Might not be enough to hurt anything, but it will change the roundness of the rod nonetheless. Some guys get away with going with ARP and never touch the rod with a hone, and some have issues. I don’t think that the GM fasteners would affect anything if torque values remain the same. Just giving you something to think about here.
