The way I check volume is to push the pressure release button on the tester, if the car can spit fuel out of the line with the release pushed and keep running, then that's good enough that I feel comfortable moving on to checking other things. If the car dies then swap the pump and see if that takes care of it.

I used carb cleaner through the PVC line that goes from the driverside valve cover to top of intake. When pulled, it started running bad. When I started putting carb cleaner in, if I did more than a quick spritz, it started bogging the engine down and eventually killed it

My pressure tester doesn't have a release button. So I just pressed the Schroder valve directly. I didn't notice a difference at running at idle. And came away with a gas shower

I believe 00pooterSS meant for you to use a small vacuum line to add cleaner to the air intake as in a separate piece. Pulling the PCV line creates a huge vacuum leak lowering the idle speed, stumbling to almost dying and then adding extra "fuel" will definitely kill the motor. Just an FYI.
