Default 5.3 Cause of damage

Hi there, so I picked up this 5.3 and started opening the motor up to inspect, removed the heads and found it like this, what could have causes this blown head gasket? Seems like there was water on one cylinder on each side
What to do to repair?
could water have gone inside while pressure washing the engine?

Can't really tell if head gasket failed. Water intrusion through an open valve is most common. Was engine stored outside without manifolds or spark plugs? Always good to rotate engine over and use bore scope (cheap using cell phone) through spark plug holes to know what's going on.

It wasstored outside for about a year or so without exhaust manifolds, for about a year, so probably could have gone inside through those ports when valves were open?

depends how deep it is, I’ve cleaned up several. That looked similar to this, I live in the rainy/humid south and see this quite often...

Get it cleaned up so you can really see what your dealing with first and you could be good with just a a re-hone but there's also a chance of too much pitting in the cylinder which means larger piston size.

Thank you guys for the advice, just like a few people thought by the way it looked, right off the bat I thought the whole thing was shot, but there's a chance that could be saved depending if it pitted to much on the cylinder walls, will get this get cleaned up and post the results,
