Default Firebird LS1 cooling issues

Just picked up a 2001 trans am ws6 and it's having some cooling issues. I know the water pump is leaking but even freshly topped off with coolant it is still overheating when not moving or in traffic. Temp is fine at 210 when I'm going 45+ mph. Anything helps thanks

some thermostats will not work correctly once it has been in an engine that overheats. Replace the thermostat and water pump before damage to the engine occurs.

Update: flushed cooolant and replaced thermostat problem is now fixed. Now I'm having a clunking from the trans when I'm in gear and not on the gas? Not sure if the two are related

Is this a "stick" car? Need a little more info about the clunking, but i seriously doubt it has anything to do with the overheating issue
