Hi
Has anyone tried swap out a old for new cam through a two peice timing cover like this? This is a budget two peice cover from Summit Racing.
I did experiment while I had it apart and took some photos here, I didn't persist with it at the time as it looked difficult. I was concerned if I undid the cam bolts and pushed the cam back into the block to free the cam pin from the timing wheel that the cam would go back too far and not be able to be retrieved.
Secondly the black chain guide under the timing gear (2nd photo) stops it dropping much at all to free it from the chain. To remove the guide I'd have to first remove the oil pump something I was hoping to avoid.
Has anyone had any success swapping out cam without removing the oil pump and or guide on one of these?
I can see it being useful on a dyno testing various cams etc but far less so in a car. I've not goofed up a Cam choice bad enough to make it worth a redo so far
More info from actual users can be found using the Search feature searching topics with "Two piece timing cover".
I don't think I'll change again but my newest cam is inefficient for a baby cam uses 20% more fuel at 60 mph in 6th gear than my old cam that made the same power.

That’s tunable. You can street tune with a wideband and get the mileage back and maybe more.
