Default 799 an upgrade for 317?

Hi there,

I'm an engine machinist turned automotive instructor and I have a student who has a 6.0 in a truck. I've read what I could find but haven't found anything useful for my particular question:

The kid has a blown head gasket and doesn't have a lot of time. My time saving method is to grab a set of heads off the shelf, machine them, then swap them. The problem is that I don't have a spare set of 317s that don't already belong to another customer. So has anyone OR what would the drivability and longevity of putting a set of 799s on this truck look like? If it were mine I'd do it but this is a poor kid in school so we're not on a 93 octane budget and the rest of the truck at least for now will remain bone stock.

Please don't muddy the thread with "well I think...." or recite something you read in a magazine. I really do need solid data to make an informed decision here. So if you haven't done it or don't have real life data from real life experience please don't reply.

Thanks

Yes it's no problem if you up the compression a little bit just use a FelPro or standard MLS gasket and put the 799 heads on you will be fine

799's on an LQ4 gives you 10:1 compression, which on an LS still can use regular.

Thanks for the replies guys we'll charge ahead with the 799s.

This feels like old school hot rodding. I like it.
