Default zero cranking oil pressure

I'm looking for advice please.
I have an L77 engine that I changed the cam, lifters etc to do the dod delete. The bottom end was left untouched.
I am ready for initial start.
I thought I would pull out the fuel pump relay before initial start so that I could get cranking oil pressure before firing.
I have a zero oil pressure reading on the scan tool plugged into the obd port and zero oil pressure reading on my oil pressure gauge on the dash which has an independent (from the ecu oil pressure sender) pressure sender in the block.
I don't want to reconnect the fuel pump relay and fire it up hoping that oil pressure will build on start up in case I damage the engine.
Should I be able to get an oil pressure reading on cranking without firing?

Please help.

Hook up a mechanical gauge to eliminate the possibility of bad sender/gauge. Then you KNOW.

In my limited experience you may or may not see oil pressure while just cranking the engine. On my 2001 H/C/I build I did not see oil pressure on the gauge on the dash, but I heard the tone of the engine change after a few times cranking.

After a cam swap on a 1999 car, I did see some oil pressure on the gauge on the dash (but not much).

Both had a new melting 10295? high pressure oil pump installed, and both built good pressure almost immediately after starting.

here is a video of the "first start" on the 2001. This was probably the 2nd or 3rd actual start attempt as it would stall out pretty quick without feathering the throttle.

On my freshly built LQ9 with a Summit cam I didn't show any oil pressure while cranking (fuel pump relay pulled). So I removed the screw in oil galley plug on the drivers side of the motor and I primed the pump with a large syringe and a 2 foot piece of tubing. When I saw oil puking out onto my floor I put the screw in plug back in. It took almost a half a quart. Then I cranked it again. After a few seconds I had 15 psi while cranking. So I plugged in the relay and started it up. I instantly had 45 psi while running.

I had cranked it for a while trying to build some kind of pressure. But after I primed it, it was almost instant.

Thank you for your reply. I tried the method you described, still no oil pressure. I probably didn’t crank it long enough. I stumbled across a really helpful YouTube post that recommended removing the spark plugs and continue cranking for about 30 seconds. Worked like charm. Oil pressure came right up. I put the plugs back in. Fired straight up. Such a great feeling. 😊

I agree. Cranking the engine to prime it is the worst way to prime it. Unless you have a hi volume oil pump that generates 125lbs pressure, the starter doesn't generate enough speed to prime the engine properly, if at all.......
