grinder11- I'm a year ahead of you, and also took metallurgy in my early college years. So much has changed, yet stayed the same in many ways. I too appreciate where powder and investment casting has gone! Amazing in many ways....

I know this is off topic, but its a journey of personal experience, and technology change. I bought a 1975 Kawasaki Z1, last year they made the Z1. I found out the hard way that the Japanese were experimenting with powder metallurgy, when I blew second gear spectacularly in only 3,000 plus miles. Repaired under warranty. But years later, I built my own Kawasaki engine and trans. Dovetailed the trans engagement dogs, I used an 1,105cc Yoshimura top end, Welded crank, etc. My point is, I remembered that failure, as it locked the rear wheel at about 50 mph, and pulling the clutch lever didnt free it!! NOT FUN!!! So when I dovetailed those trans gears, I looked for trans gears that had machining marks on the gears and engagement dogs. Never had a failure, even with that 1,105 motor yanking away. I'm sure that technology has come a long way in 47 years, though that aforementioned drill bit failed miserably.........

In case anyone in the future finds this thread and wants to know how things turned out, I've put about 1700 miles on the car so far, and it burns no oil. I'm pretty pumped, the car runs better than ever. The old LS1 burned oil when I bought it with 40k miles, now it doesn't burn any.

I hope my turns out the same.... I'm going to try to hone it and see what it looks like.

Oof, man, that doesn't look great. A ball hone might clean that up decently though.

I was rear ended and the car was totaled a week after I last posted in this thread. So I really can't say I have any longer term updates. I do plan on buying a roller at some point in the future and putting together a road course toy with this engine though, and I'm pretty confident it will be just fine.

I'm really curious and will find out soon what the side of the piston and rings look like. I'll post up pics. Good luck with the new build! Post pics of course.
