Crap! - failed timesert. Now what??
So long story short, a timesert has pulled from one of the deeper head bolt holes in my 2000 ls1 engine.
What does one do when a timesert pulls out?? It hasn’t backed out, it’s actually stripped the thread it was seated in in the hole.
Because the hole has already been drilled out with the timesheet kit (and subsequent thread rip), simply installing another timesert is not an option….there’s no thread left for it so bite into.
The timesert drill bit drills out the head bolt hole to about 13.2mm. I was thinking I could try and drill it out to install an oversized stud/bolt like a 9/16, but that would involve also drilling out the bolt hole in the head gasket (eww)….and now that I think about it, may not leave a lot of meat between the bolt hole and the water jacket….
I could also go deeper into fresh metal…..but that would involve getting one longer head bolt / stud. I worked out it would need to be around 200mm long. I can find anywhere a head stud in an m11x2 thread that long.
Has anyone had this happen to them? If so, what options do I have?
Dave
Sorry that's best info I have available.
