i'm helping a buddy out on his project and he has a motor that has been sitting for a while that i'm working to get running. the story is something like the motor was recently rebuilt and has a short amount of break in time on it.
i decided to look in the cylinders since it has been sitting just to check if there was any rust or anything before turning the motor over and saw these scratches/gouges or whatever in the number one cylinder. piston tops looked clean with a little carbon but not much . the other cylinders looked fine.
is this thing fucked? these seem too deep to be run like this to me though its kind of hard to really tell, but they're significantly bigger than the hatch marks on the cylinders. thoughts? this is on the surface to the center of the block
of the motor
i'm at least glad i checked before i tried to get the thing running.
Pictures on the web can be deceiving, but if I had to guess from the pics, I’d say the wrist pin has walked out somehow. I’d be inclined to pull the head off that side and take a closer look. If the marks are as deep as it looks in the pic, it might be done.
While pictures can be deceiving, that is pretty clear given that you can use the cross hatch as reference. I would run a compression and leakdown to see what you are working with. I would expect the numbers to be lower and continue to diminish over time.

thanks for the feedback...yeah i guess we decided it needs to come apart and figure out if the block can be saved.
still wondering why this happened as the motor only had a short amount of break in/run time on it supposedly.
