Looks pretty grungy. Only way to know is to see how much machining cleans up the decks and bores, but then you have machining costs whether or not it is junk.
Tough call, but I would pass. There are far cleaner engines out there....

Lifter bores likely look just as bad, which means having to step up in lifter size too for more $. Or bushed bores which is still $. Even if free you’ll end up paying more in the end for labor.

LQ9s in GOOD shape aren't that hard to come by. Pass.

I wouldn't take that for free, personally. Youd have to pay me enough for me to pay somebody else to haul it off, plus some boot for wasting my time.

Looks bad..It's really hard to say if it will clean up with a bore. Does it even turn over?

Seeing this post is like a reminder that I need to go check on my iron blocks in the shop. The best thing to do when a block sits for awhile, especially those sitting out in the elements is to grease it good and bag it up. Engine oil and Marvels Mystery oil works okay but WD40 isn't a lubricant that keeps the rust away and shouldn't be used for this. The short block in this post is a prime example of someones neglect but maybe it was gotten to in time to save it.

SHEEEESH! Was it soaking in Salt water?? My biggest concern wouldn't be the cylinder bores, unless they're already bored oversize. My concern would be the lifter bores, bearing saddles and main caps.......

If you have a shop that still has a real hot tank system (Dip) you could strip it and have it soaked, it will take all the rust off, and youll see what you have left but its at least 100 bucks to do if you have it all prepped, can go as high as 200 pretty easy. As mentioned, every machined surface on the block will need attention most likely.

Even if I got that block for free & still worked at a machine shop to do all the work myself...I still wouldn't mess with it. I 3rd the vote...OVERBOARD!!!
