Hey all just wanted to come here to double check if my stupid mistake is fixable. I am rebuilding a 2005 5.3 for a swap and ordered a new set of piston rings as the original ones had 200k miles on them. However, I accidentally ordered rings for an engine that is .020 over, and I'm staying factory bore. My question is this: will I run into any issues just filing down these bigger rings to the correct gap? I tried to research this to no avail and wanted to come here and ask people who know more than me. Thanks!

 

I wouldn't use them. You can change the gap (with a lot of work), but those rings are made to a specific bore size. You'll end up squeezing them tighter to fit a smaller bore, and end up with more tension on the rings than optimal. My opinion, but I think most would agree.....

 

Send them back. Even if you file them to actually “fit” in the cylinder, the rings won’t be round at that point and it won’t seal correctly.
