706 and 862 head on gen3
706 is the casting that some of, have the "Castech crack" problem. It's entirely possible that the 862 replaced a cracked 706. The crack-prone 706s have a casting mark that looks like a D-cell battery, under the rocker rail, toward the end with the exterior casting number on it. The cracks occur right above the middle row of head bolts: could be any of the 4, or even more than one. Best to have it checked for that if it's got the Castech (contract manufacturer for GM) mark on it.
None of the 706s or 862s I have seen had the notch but I have read about some of the early ones having it.
But for all other purposes they are the same and you will not have a problem using one 706 and one 862 head.
