Default Lifter noise when hand cranking engine on stand??

My LQ4 project has been stalled for many years. I've recently started working on it. It has been sitting on the stand with heads on but no rockers or pushrods. Turning the crank by hand occasionally with no noise. Now that I've assembled the valve train, I can hear noise when turning the crank by hand. I've loosened the rockers and no noise. Torqued only the #1 rockers and watched the #1 exhaust and intake lifters with valley cover off and hear a "tick" noise after the lifter clears the top of the cam lobe(valves closing). I did the same test #8 cylinder and can hear the same noise as the lifter clears the top of the cam lobe.

Since I've never pulled the heads, they have the original 45K miles lifters, No noise when engine pulled years ago. I'm sure the lifters have drained over the years. Do you guys think noise will go away when the lifters are "primed"?

Possibly something to do with the valve spring. Possibly wear on the rocker tip.

You have NO IDEA how many things there are in the valve train that can cause a "tick" other than the lifters.

Thanks for the response. I ruled out the lifters. I tested and torqued down separately the furthest #7 and #8 rocker arms and the sound still sounded like it was closer to the front timing cover. A stethoscope supported that.

I forgot to mention, I also replaced the timing gears and chain. The chain is an LS2 style and had a lot of slack when I first installed. I ended up buying a trick flow damper and installed that. I opened up the front cover and started rotating the crank with only one rocker arm torqued down. The timing chain would tighten as the valve would start to open then the chain would slap against the damper as the valve would start to close. Torqued down a few more rockers and at each valve event the timing chain would slap against damper. Now I have to decide to run without the damper or research for better chains.

Does anybody know if the "whipping" motion will tighten up when vehicle running? I found another post with the same issue and their video shows exactly what mine is doing. Leave as is and run it?

It tightens as it warms up.

Agreed. A lot of aluminum in the engine, and aluminum expands considerably when heated to 200°F. Another point is with just 1 rocker arm, there's no constant tension on the chain
Throw another 15 rockers into that equation, and the chain will have more consistent and constant tension on it, so less all or nothing situation as it relates to chain tension ....
