Default Cam upgrade

My car is a 1970 a body that weighs 3800 with me in it . It has a ls1 with a ss4000 stall, 4l60 trans and 4:11 gears, fast 92, 1 7/8 lt headers, afr 230 small bore heads, forged bitten end, us pulley. I have a ms3 and btr stg4 cam already but contacted a couple vendors to see what they recommended.tick stg3 street heat (239/244 635/610 112 t 3) junkyard dog (232/244 621/604 111 t 4) or the G5x3 (???). I will use the car for driving to cruise ins, the track 3 or 4 times a year, some street racing and roll racing. I drive the car about 2,000 to 3,000 miles a year. What can best suits me or do you suggest something else? The car has tsp stg2.5 heads,3:42 gears,ed Curtis ssht can,ss3600 stall right now but want more.

What's your compression ratio?

Also, this is the cam you have in the current setup?LS "StreetSweeper-HT" Hydraulic Roller Camshaft

Specs: 228° - 232° - 111° - .612" -.600"

I’m selling that motor and I have a new forged bottom end ls1 I’m putting in my car. I don’t have the heads on it yet but I think they are 62cc ( will have to check ) and I don’t know the cc of the valve reliefs in the pistons right off the top of my head but I’m going to try to get as much compression as I can run on 91 gas. That is the cam I currently have in this motor and it runs good but I was wanting a little more in the next motor.

I also have direct port nitrous plumbed in the intake but I won’t go over 150 or 200 shot. I won’t run the nitrous much for that to make much of a deciding factor

From the sounds of it, your money would be best spent doing a stroker kit with the new heads, and the BTR cam you have on hand. And leaving the rearend and stall alone. You'd be further ahead, and the car would be more street-friendly.

The top end will flow plenty. All you're doing with changing the camshaft is sacrificing a bunch of low and mid-range for a little more top end. Even the JYD, which is mildly bigger than what you have now (with a lot more exhaust duration) carries to 7k before it peaks in a 6.0L. Those bigger cams you might gain 10hp after 6k+rpm. But you'll give up a bunch below that. So if you decide not to stay with the stroker, I'd go withe JYD for that reason.

I already have the short block so just trying to use some of the parts I already have. I don’t want to build the motor the same as what I already have because that would be a waste. I got a good deal on the heads even though I know they are big for the street. What cam would you suggest?

If you have between 10.5-11:1 compression, then either the Cammotion Cathedral Port JYD or SUM-8710R10 would be a good choice. Summit's is only about 2* more overlap than the Street Sweeper and , and a 45* IVC. So should be streetable with your current setup and the additional exhaust duration will help push the upper rpm still while keeping most of the low-end.

With the choices you gave, I would go with the Tick Street Heat. If you are roll racing w/ 4.11's(like me), it needs to rpm. With the 4000rpm converter, should 60ft fine, play with the advance on the cam if you need to bring the powerband down some. You NEED to port the Fast intake if you have not already. Lots of power there. Also pay attention to the whole air filter tube/setup, etc. Lots of power there also if you get it right. Put some Pac 1207X springs on the heads, whichever heads you end up using. The .660 crap is not enough.

I wouldn’t change the cam, minuscule gains for the money and potentially worse drivability. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze. Probably need to look at forced induction or more cubes.

I like the streetsweeper regular for you. 236, 240, 111+3 but I'd actually get a custom cam from Ed with a little bigger split like 236/244. People are seeing nice gains with the bigger splits.

if you wanted to go smaller, also consider the 8710 from summit like was recommended, but honestly at 230/242, it's not going to be drastically different than the ss ht you have. Ss ht is better down low and the 8710 would be better on the top end.

I might be interested in buying your ss ht if it's in good shape when you pull it. Let me know.

I haven’t seen much on the 230 small bore heads. They must not be very popular.

I'm actually confused. You are talking about 2 different cars in your original post?

Nvm i read the whole thread again. Use either the btr or tsp cam you already have. they are both solid and decent sized.

I sold the motor in my car and wanting to build one a tad bit bigger. I can either use 230 heads, ms3 or btr stg4 cam I have laying around or can buy all new stuff. I was just wondering if the cam vendor suggestions or what I already have would work better.

You might go custom cam to make the combo work max. Mamo is probably one of the best to spec an AFR cam for a given combo. Not cheap, but nothing is anymore.

You might go with a smaller head. That 230 head is real designed for a 4.00 bore or bigger. It fits a 3.900 bore, but not ideal TBH, your TSP 2.5 heads are probably plenty. I would focus on the valvetrain/intake manifold go from there.

FYI, a lot of brain trust has left the building here. Your combo is nothing new, start searching old threads and you'll find more info there than anyone now can really contribute. Sad, but I see it here more and more

do you happen to have a link to the air filter tube mods for more power? Seems like different setups.

No, I don't have any specific links, but you need to get it sized right and not be a restriction. It's tricker than you think. If you have access to a dyno, you can put the car in a SD tune, test it with no filter setup, and then reverse engineer from there abd test for no loss. Plan on at least a 4in tube and make it as short overall as possible, while getting the best quality air as possible Like I said, it's tricky
