Lifter preload So, I've never really messed with stock LS stuff, but have a cam only 5.3 in a cruiser. Did a new timing set, elgin ss2 cam, elgin lifters, new trays, gaskets and so on. Using a 7.400 pushrod, and 22 ft/lb on the stock rockers I get 1.25 turns on the rocker bolt. I have some valvetrain chatter though. Is the number of turns albeit a "sloppy" way of doing it showing I need more preload?

Using a pushrod length checking tool with the rocker arm set to zero lash and the cam lobe on the base circle of the camshaft is how you should determine pushrod length.
• .050" stock lash
• .070" - .100" performance
• .120" - .150" total travel
So I'd be shooting for .070" preload on those.
