Default Quench questions

What is the optimal quench for LSs ? Does it change if your using just aluminum vs hypereutectic vs forged pistons?

.035 - .040 for just about any engine.

That’s what I remembered but forged pistons needed a little more gap vs tighter fitting hypereutectic pistons so it was better to go on high side on forged but lower side (if possible) on the hypereutectic (because of more piston rock with the higher gap vs tighter gap) but I’m thinking back 20 years ago when I was doing automotive machining work. (Trying to dust through all the cobwebs in my mind lmao)

They need more Cylinder wall clearance for forged Vs hypereutectic pistons. You still target the same quench.

Aluminum blocks "grow" more that Iron blocks. Some race motors go much tighter on the quench. just depends on the application.

I recall a conversation I had with Tony Mamo about a motor he built with tighter quench and he stated when he removed the heads you could see the out line of the piston where it was just barley knocking the carbon off the deck of the head and leaving an in print in the carbon. It was not touching the head and it never made contact but damn was it close... Again built for a specific goal in mind.

Aluminum blocks can be set up tighter than cast iron blocks.

.035 in an aluminum is fine.....040 probably better if your running cast iron

The aluminum engine block expands more so the real quench is closer to .040 at operating temps

Cheers,
Tony

Anything worth doing is worth doing well. Build it right the first time....its alot cheaper than building it twice!!
