Default How does this happen??

At the beginning of October I suffered a snap ring come apart from behind the compressor wheel on my 88mm turbo, warranty fix and their first of 2025.

As the car was down anyways I was changing my valve covers and noticed on cylinder 1 that the rocker on the intake had the pin that holds the wheel on somehow rattled off and is sitting in the pan and with any luck it's stuck to my magnetic plug.

Rockers in question are 3/8" stud mount Lunati 1.7 aluminum rollers. Johnson 2110r lifters. Trick Flow spring kit 2500295:

1.275 of spring
1.080 coil bind
450 lbs/in
1.800 installed height
150 lbs seat pressure
420 lbs open pressure

This is the only rocker that this happened too all the others are good to go. I can't imagine my springs being the culprit since they aren't really that wild. Could it just be a stroke of bad luck?? Or fatigue that ultimately led to this failure?? There's about 10k miles on this engine.

It looks to me like the engine was stopped just as this was happening there was no aluminum in immediate area of that valve and it looks like the aluminum was smeared on the retainer.

Anyways let me know what y'all think of this one. Thanks guys

THIS IS THE **** that keeps me up at night.... Could be anything related to the car really but VALVETRAIN specifically sucks *****.

I'd love to donkey kick the aftermarket right in the sack for all of this but I also can't live without them so here we are.

I'm gonna go ahead and say it's a one off and try to sleep tonight...

I'd never lose sleep over something like this. I'd just like to know the cause. I've already got some comp ultra pro magnum 1.8 rockers just waiting for a new spring kit to arrive

Your choices:
1) TRY to buy ONE lunati rocker to replace the (known) bad one...
2) Buy a set of SIXTEEN Lunati rockers, and HOPE you've replaced the bad ones...
3) Buy sixteen NOT- Lunati rockers ?

Yea I went with option 3. Picked up a brand new set of Comp ultra pro magnum rockers, studs, guide plates and pushrods for $450 on FB marketplace. Just waiting on the spring kit

Pretty sure Lunati had discontinued those rockers years ago

Your a better man than me, I’d be thinking the currently unidentified “cause” is about to land in the comp magnum factory.

I do think that you and I might solution in the same way though… it’s all gotta go, you know while I’m in here and stuff.

I’d say that it’s an isolated faulty rocker. If it were an improper setup, rowdy harmonics, an oiling issue, or anything amiss like this up there, you’d see the evidence across the board, not just on one rocker arm. Stuff happens. Good on you for catching it early.

Thanks man. I really thank my lucky stars that I just happened to need to change my valve covers and saw that.

Am I missing something here? As in; why would any "cause" land in the Comp Magnum factory? He was running Lunati rockers....

Probably not missing a thing, its a comment which drives home why I lose sleep over random unexplained failures.

Its like the first time you fire up a fresh engine, except I have it for this first 100 miles anytime I mess with internals which is sorta frequently.

And again I’m pretty sure I’d have gone with option 3 as well here.

So, in other words, are you saying he's reinstalling the problem?
