I was looking over a couple of early LS1 blocks I have and noticed that the 12550592 blocks have two threaded holes above the crankshaft centerline at the front of the block. I initially thought they might be for a timing chain tensioner, but the tensioner doesn’t appear to fit there. One of my 12562174 blocks also doesn’t have these threaded holes at all.
Does anyone know what these holes are for, or why they are present on the 12550592
casting but not on the 12562174? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ahh dampener well that doesn’t fit either I have a couple of those and I tried one earlier, also this is a block from a 98 ss

apparently the ls1/early ls6 and ls3 have 2 different dampeners but I didn’t know the blocks came with them in 98
