dilemma, need some opinions
heres my problem
I got a 224/228 114 cam from Z28venom off this board for a terrific price. Originally i budgeted for the works including dual springs, pushrods, tit. retainers, new seats, oil pump, timing chain, dyno tune, professional install, the works...THEN, the shoulder decided it wants to keep popping out (injury from when i was younger) and im forced to get shoulder surgery or i lose my partial atheletic scholarship (cause iw ont be able to play at all as opposed to 3 months in a sling).
now here is the deal, my budget will allow me to get the springs, push rods, tit retainers , a mail order tune from tsp and some guys that offered to install it on the side for 300. but i cannot get the chain or oil pump
.
SHould i just sell the cam to someone for the same deal i got (considering i only opened the box to make sure everything was ok then packaged it back up), or should i go ahead and install it, and when im off during fall break (late october) install the oil pump and chain? Iknwo its a hard way to do this but honestly, these are my only real options. and i can't leave this sitting around at the house ....
what would you guys do if you wer ein my position?
Thanks
Travis

I would use the factory retainers with a new set of 918's, add a new factory timing chain and you are ready to go. 918's will drop right in with no machining or special seats needed. They are quite sufficient for your cam up to .600 lift. If your stock oil pump is working and providing sufficient pressure with the stock cam then it will do the same with your cam. You can add hardened pushrods very easily at anytime in the future. Tuning will still be needed of course.
The $300 bucks for the install would easily cover the pump and chain. I just intalled my TSP cam package over the weekend, it's not difficult at all. Swapping the springs takes the longest, just be patient and follow the cam swap guide on LS1howto.com, and you'll be set! I'm sure you could find someone to "help" you install it, I would if I lived nearby. This way you get everything you planned for minus the installation charges, and the satisfaction of doing it yourself. There is just something about cruisin town and having someone ask about your cam, then they ask "who put it in for ya" and the feeling I get when I say "me" is just priceless. Hope everything works out for ya, good luck.
I am a prideless man with a bumed shoulder, can't really do an install myself. plus i learned a long time ago, me and motor work dont mix. Id much rather just sell the cam then attempt this myself. plus i dont have the tools nor the space. so i have limited options unfortunately. Thanks for the thought of helping me though

well after speaking to a few people via PM's i've decided to keep the cam shaft in my car, and over the next couple ofmonths while i can afford peice by peice, i want to get everything i will need to run this cam safely without cutting any corners.
I dont want the absolute top of the line, but which springs/retainers should i go with for a 224/228 cam? which timing chain has the best reputation? and last question, will the ported zo6 oil pump do the trick?if igure i should be able to purchase all the parts by october then over the winter, take the time to install this bad boy on my own (after the shoulder heals).
Thanks for the suggestions guys!
