Thumbs up Tip for crank bolt removal

I don't have a longer crank bolt and I was having trouble pulling my crankshaft balancer with the stock bolt. I used the puller to bring it off the crank snout as far as I could w/o seriously risking screwing up threads, and I still had a good ways to go and all the yanking by hand in the world got me nowhere. Then it dawned on me.... why am I even messing with the bolt?

I haven't seen anyone else suggest what I am about to, but I'm sure its no new major revelation. Just set a short & fat socket on the crank snout, and set the 3 jaw puller screw on it and wrench away. It was very simple, and with this method one would not have to worry about stopping, backing the bolt off some, and setting the puller back in place.

I just cut up some 1/2" rod and stuck it all the way down the crank. Simple!

The crank is gun drilled.
Don't use something to push in the hole or you might pop out the plug that's in there.

Question

Derek, what size socket(s) did you use?

Thanks.

I had the same problem and Jason at texas speed recommended using the waterpump bolts with the puller and it worked like a champ as they are longer but same threads.
