Default Comp R and lifter collapse

Comp said I needed 140#/350# seat/open springs and Comp R lifters for my XE-R lobes, so I did, before I saw any posts of trouble with Comp R lifters or the posts saying stockers are fine. Now the valve train has developed noise, but only after several passes. It seems to get worse after each pass but goes away after sitting or idleing a bit. There is no noise driving on the street.

So I call Comp and they have never heard of anything like this. They asked and I told them about the ported pump, ~70psi, Pro Mag rockers set to 1/5 turn preload, 140/350 springs, 0W40 Mobile 1, etc. Their conclusion was that a lifter was bleeding down and their solution was thicker oil ...

I can't tell which lifter it is, so will have to change the whole set if it comes to that. No offer from Comp for a replacement(s).

I've seen mention here of collapse ... what is lifter collapse?

Has anyone run higher than 70 psi and/or shimmed the relief spring in the pump?

Has anyone run solid rollers on their hydraulic cam? If so, what lash?

Any ideas?

Talk about customer service!!! I just got a PM from a Comp tech who gave me his number. Spent some time on the phone with him and have some things to check!

what are you checking? I also had problems with my comp r's, I had to swap out for stockers. that 0 40 oil should be a 40 weight when warm which is pretty damn thick.

What else did comp say?

My valve train is dead quiet with Pro Magnums and Comp Rs. 1/5 turn preload was right on. Let us know what you find out.

That's cool of Comp Cams. Oh lifter collapse is bad...bad. Basically the plunger that the pushrod sits on collapses and you're left with a lot of slack in the valve train so you hear "tick" noise pretty much all the time... not good.

also I wouldn't run solid rollers on a hyd. roller cam. The lobes are way different and you usually run super strong springs because the lobes are so aggressive.

Although those XE-R lobes are pretty crazy, and probably are looking closer and closer to a solid roller...

Good luck.

Yeah, I thought 0w40 should be plenty thick, but maybe Mobile 1 isn't as thick as dino oil. At this point I wish I had kept my stockers.

The tech felt that the problem must be one of oil viscosity (rather than pressure) or pumping the pan dry. He wanted me to start with making sure I had pressure at high RPM and try a thicker oil. He said they had no problem replacing them under warranty but since it requires pulling the heads we should check these other things first. He also said that 918's are plenty good for my cam (he runs them on XE-R lobes with more duration and lift than I have) and that I don't need R lifters for my cam.

Now, I got to thinking about pumping the pan dry and I recalled an oddity from my last trip to the strip. I have spacers under the valve covers because of the Pro Mag rockers. I had pulled the covers looking for a loose lifter or other source of the noise (even though it had disappeared by the time I took the car off the trailer at home) and discovered that my car was smoking on the return road and back in the pits. Even after I cut the engine it smoked for another minute. It was oil smoke and I didn't have one spacer in correctly. However, it didn't smoke loading it or unloading it or sitting in the staging lanes or during the burnout or even sitting on the twostep at the lights. So maybe there is something to inadequate drain back on my motor. I haven't looked at it yet to see where the drain back path is.

That is what I thought. Somehow the plunger must get down past the feed hole so it can't recover.

I've always hated the 'R' Lifters. Nothing but problems.
I prefer stock lifters.
