Default Cam question about adv/retarding??

Ok I didn't do this but got the info from this months Car Craft....

They added an LPE GT1-1 cam to ta STOCK 5.3L out of a SSR. Ok with the headers they used on the dyno with no tuning the gained 100hp 310stock..410 after cam/header install.

Ok now to my question....
The dyno numbers they provided started at 2200 and went all the way up to 6800... the stock motor was doin well down low but the LPE cam LOST close to 50 HP in the 2200-3500 rpm range. Yet climbed like a mad man above 3800 all the way to 6800 where they made the 410hp. I own a truck (03 Avalanche) and weighs in close to the 6100lb mark. I would love to do the build up that Car Craft is doing to their 5.3L BUT with the nubers building WAY up in the RPM band my truck would be a dog as far as a daily driver. If I was to retard the cam would the powerband come down into my "useable" range??? I would love to see the 100hp gain but not at 6800 for a street truck. Would it be possible to even retard the cam enough to bring the powerband down for a heavy truck??

If not the LPE GT1-1 cam is there a better cam for a truck that will give great HP and TQ numbers but at a more useable level..say 800 or 1200 rpm up to around 5800 or 6000??? The truck isn't a race vehicle but everyone loves more power.

We gained that much and didn't lose anything over 2000 rpm but only steadily gained everywhere. Something weird was happening to that engine.

Like I said just regurgitating the info from the article.

If you didn't loose anything from 2K up.... then do you think this would be a good truck performance cam??? Being my truck weighs close to 6100lbs and I need the power lower but still like to run her hard... is this a option for me to consider??

The best torque cams out there for the trucks have got to be the Comp 206/212 and the 212/218 Low-lift....both of those won't build nearly the hp as the LPE cam but will build CRAZY torque numbers down low

Hey bonedog, you need to advance a cam for more lowend power, this closes the intake sooner to promote higher cylinder pressure so more torque,I think the cam was too big for that 5.3 in a truck.

the LSA on the cam is...

206/212..112 lift 515/522
212/218..114 lift 522/529

here is a link http://www.compcams.com/Technical/Ca...971_Page-3.jpg

Thanks for the info on Comp... when i got on their site there is a wealth of info for the LS1 based platform.

They even had an article from PHR that talks about bench racing numbers vs real world needs.
Looks like I am in the catagory in their article that is looking for real world daily driver but want that kick in the pants feel when I hit the throttle.
