head bolt torque discrepencies
head bolt torque discrepencies on jmx's site it is stated to torque the head bolts to 22ftlb+ 90*. according to a 97 vette helms manual it is 22ftlbs+76*+76*. thats a huge difference. i went ahead and followed the manuals guidelines, but why the difference and who is right? i put LS6 heads on with LS6 gaskets using LS6 bolts. the bolts are the same for both the LS1 and LS6, the gasket is a metal one while the factory one was the silver material one. anyone know? thanks
The GM book states first pass 22ftlb 2nd 90*1-10 final 90*1-8 and 45* on 9&10 22ftlb on the 5 10mm bolts on the top. 9 & 10 are the two shorter 15 mm on each side of the head. Good luck! Just did this a day ago so I am very sure of my information had the GM instuctions in front of me when I did it for absolute accuracy.
well crap. oh and yes i am talking about just the really long 11mm bolts not the outer ones or the front and rear two. so what should i do? and why the hell is my helms manual wrong? makes me wonder what else is wrong in the manual. thanks
Listen just go through and do it just as randy and I are talking about I promise you you will be fine. Just make sure that all your bolt holes are clean and are not filled with fluid etc... Best to blow them out with air. use a little thread sealant like the teflon paste on them so to make sure you don't get any leakage on the bolts that go though the coolant system etc... It is not hard.

Revised higher amount of degrees is to guarantee all the bolts ( TTY ) are stretching and thus providing even clamping force. This is to give better chance things work even if the cleaning of the threads has not been best possible.
As far as the bolts are within the stretch region it is not very critical how many degrees you turn.
