Thumbs up New Cam Installed

I finally got the car buttoned-up. The radiator was a PIA, but got it okay anyway. After filling the radiator and connecting the battery, I got in the car to see if she would crank okay. Turned the key and she cranked just fine. I figured it was time to hook up the coil packs and crank her again. I turned the key and she instantly came to life, no hesitation at all. I couldn't believe how much louder she sounded, and a killer lope too. After a couple minutes she was idling decently, but still needed relearning. I went for a test drive keeping the rpms well under 4k. I noticed at red lights that the idle was kind of funky, but I attributed it to needing further relearning. When I got home I changed the VE table (400-1200rpms) and set the rev limiter at 6600.

Today I went for a long ride and she was running amazing with the stock pe vs rpm table. There were a couple tiny backfires, but she didn't seem to be overly rich. One thing I noticed is that the car seems to be sucking down fuel like crazy. Do bigger cams use a lot more fuel? I didn't notice an amazing SOTP difference, but the car just seems stronger all the way around. When I retune the LTFTs and PE I think she will be much stronger. One cool side benefit of this cam install is that before my engine was ticking like crazy and sounded really sloppy. After the new spring install the ticking is gone, and the valvetrain just sounds so tight, albeit a little diesel-like sounding. I did have a couple loose header bolts that I tightened during the cam install, maybe that was the cause of the ticking, or maybe the new pushrods are helping.

I really took my time, about two weeks, to get this cam installed and the result is zero issues. The car sounds so much better, has more power, obviously, the valvetrain is awesome now, and no more ticking.

This by FAR the best mod I've done. It was the most fun and has provided the most bennies.

One last opportunity to thank the folks here who helped me; you know who you are. I wouldn't have made it through without your help. So THANKS, so much! Tomorrow I'll start working on my fueling. Later.

Now that was not too hard, was it? Congrats on the install. Now that you have one under your belt the next one will only take you 2 days.
Saved yerself about 500 bucks too!

I wouldn't do a cam install for 500 bucks.

Thanks Blake. Will do.

No SOTP difference? Geez, I put in the TR220, picked up 30 HP and 30TQ and the SOTP difference was pretty amazing.

DSS, there is a DEFINITE difference, and I haven't revved much over 4k yet, plus I need to scan and do some fuel tuning, but I'm so happy with this cam. 3.42s are still 3.42s. I'll get back at ya when I do some serious driving, and of course the fuel tuning. Maybe I'm just jaded when it comes to horsepower.

That's the difference between a first-timer and someone who knows what they're doing. I think if I was to do another one it would go a lot easier, but not $300. easier.

You must have it down to a science.

Thanks pdd!

DEEZ, the only thing that held me back was the stock rearend.

I've never seen so many cars pull up behind, hear the loudmouth and cam crackling, and then hook a left or a right. It's the perks I tell ya! The chicks, seems like kind of a mixed bag, some look at me like I'm the most obnoxious MF on the face of the earth, and some seem to like it. Did I mention perks?

Man, I sure am missing the lope of the TR220-112 now.

Glad everything is working well for ya.

I was going to go cruise "the stip" Saturday night (first time in like 7 years), to go pick on ricers. I was half expecting to see a lopey F-body up there. I never ended up making it.

LTFT - Long Term Fuel Trim... These are what dictate fueling for the engine. They are influenced from STFT (short term yadda yadda). STFT's are a result of what the 02's are reading.

SOTP - Seat Of The Pants... as opposed to dyno/track results.

PE - Performance Enrichment - a mode in the computer when you put your foot down. Extra fuel is added in, and the computer sort of goes open loop.

Thanks marc. Yeah, the lope is pretty cool. I raised my idle speed to 850/875AC, seems perfect there.

It does feel good Thunder, and thanks. It seems the more you suffer, the better you feel later.
