Default New Enthusiast Engine Questions

Alright guys ive been on here for awhile, but im thinking about doin some major stuff this winter while my car is parked. I have a 1999 SS Six speed, well first of all my tranny is getting rebuilt by FLP, im getting the stage 2 T-56, but my motor has almost 99.5K on it, and i know alot of people say thy last for a while, and thats fine, but im gonna start saving now for something. What would be my best bet to go? Im looking for something thats gonna be a really mild mannered daily driver, but be a monster when she needs to be. Im looking to do like 500-600 rwhp, but keep in mind im 19 and somewhat on a budget.Butwould like it to be able to handle forced induction, maybe like a turbo, or if the new roots style supercharger comes out. So i dunno which way to start thinking about. If anyone can help me out, please do, thanks

I would look into a rebuild to freshen it up especially if your looking into forced induction. That would be the first thing most definitely such as rings, pistons, rods for starters. But WHOA a mild mannered daily driven 500-600 rwhp monster!!!!! Your talking a shitload of power, close to 550 at the crank minimal. Ill tell you what that dont come cheap especially if your on a budget. Youll be looking at a lot of aftermarket pieces indeed. I would recommend aiming a little lower with your power goals, maybe the 425 club, especially since your on a budget...depending on how tight of a budget I dont know. But some guys think a small budget is 20 grand! Definitely do your research, the LS1 has a lot of ways to hotrod it and combinations are practically endless, new parts come in and out like crazy. Whatever you do decide to do Good Luck and Im sure others will chime in to help.

Also check around with some of the sponsors, I see that your in Lagrange, Im here in Oaklawn. You should give Larry a call at LS1SPEED INC in Schaumburg for some help. Also in Orland Park PowerHousePerformance speak with John or Chris.

I was talking about 500 rwhp with the forced induction, i mean if i have everything like some mild heads and a mild cam, with like a turbo or supercharger, i mean is 500rwhp that hard to get? sorry if its a stupid question, like i said im just getting more and more into it, and i dont know enough to even know what im trying to talk about..lol..sorry guys

Oh you can definitely get to 500 horse its just all about green if you know what I mean! A turbo or supercharger figure anywhere from 3000 to 5000 depending on brand and setup plus install and tune if you cant do it, which is probably 500-1000. A set of heads and a cam could be around 1500 to 2000+++ depending on brand and type plus. This is all in addition to your rebuild which Im sure your gonna need, I think everyone would agree not to put any high boost into a 99000 mile car. Its an exspensive hobby for sure but I love blowin my money on it. Oh yeah and dont feel stupid everyone doesnt know everything about cars, we all started out just like you. The LS1 likes certain things and hates different things it works this way and that, its all a learning process, and I still havent learned everything yet. Dont be afraid to contact sponsors either most are very friendly and are willing to make a setup that works for you. Just to give you an idea my car makes in the neighborhood of 370-380 rear wheel horse with my mods in signature.

should i just do a rebuild or would it be better in the long run to maybe buy a longblock that would be able to handle forced induction? Like i said im looking at the 382 stroker, but im not sure

Most definitely a longblock would be an excellent choice! Most people that start to think about rebuilds usually go with more cubic inches most of the time. A longblock 382 would be a great choice, all your bases would be covered and youd have a hell of a motor to start putting boost into. Another option would be looking into a stroker motor like a 383 which usually results in anywhere from 475-550 hp at the crank and a shitload of torque. All bore engines of the same size usually perform the same, it all comes down into the cost of setting them up as the stroker needs work for clearance and other tolerances and the all bore most likely needs to be resleeved. LS1SPEED has a nice 382 longblock for around 7200.00 with great parts through out, you can also select the heads and cam that are put into it according to if your going natural or forced. I think its like 12000.00 installed. Anymore question be glad to try and help.
