Default Crazy amounts of oil consumption; fixes?

I burn about 2 quarts for EVERY TANK OF GAS!!! At idle, it blows smoke, and when I get on it, it's crazy. I'm going to pull the heads and replace the rings. Is there anything else I should check or replace while I am in there? Thanks.

I have recently done research on this and although i am not a mechanic there are only 3 potential sources of your oil consumption:

1. A ring Problem

2. A valve stem problem on your heads

3. Oil being sucked thru your pcv valve and into your intake manifold.

I have heard that a leak down test would determine whether its a valve stem problem.

Best of luck.

I have determine it isn't the PVC so that eliminates number 3. Can you explain a little more about the valve stem problem? How would that cause it? Thanks.

Here is how a professional SBC chevy builder and jet engineer, Shirl Dickey, explained it to me:

"I have found that it is mandatory to cut the valve guides down when using high lift cam profiles... If the guides have not been cut down, it is possible that the valve retainers could hit the seals and damaged them. Also when using larger diameter dual valve springs, you must use the valve seal from the early truck engines with cast iron heads. These seals do not have the spring seat as part of the seal since cast iron heads do not require spring seats under the springs"

Hope that helps you,
