Default Preload Question, Why 22 Ft-Lbs

I understand the process of preload but what I don't understand is why I have to hit the magic 22 ftpound in so many turns after 0 lash. Why couldn't I just reach zero lash and then go 1/16 to 1/8 turn past 0 lash in the case of camp Rs without veriffying that it happens at 22 ft-lbs?

The 22 ft pds is the tension on the bolt that holds the rocker tight. You might get the lash you want but there will not be enough torque on the bolt to keep it tight. Thats why adjustables use polylocks to keep the nut tight

what he said

you are comparing apples to oranges..
stock rockers are not adjustable...22ftlbs really has nothing to do with a zero lash although it is something past..
Comp Rs are adjustble..about 1/5 turn past zero lash cold..with comp r lifters.

Wow...1/5th of a turn past zero lash is all Comp recommends for preload...No wonder everyone says they make way more noise that stock lifters...

I Just did Crane Adjustables and they were 2 full turns (0.090") worth of preload after zero lash...

Peace...Gman

Comp recommends .008-.010" which is about 1/5 turn...no more noise than stock. They make more noise when they arent installed properly...soaked in oil, adjustable rockers with correct preload...

1- preload is an action on the lifter not the rocker.
2- there are 2 kinds of rockers
a-adjustables and non-adjustables >>>(stock units are non-adj)
On non adjustable rockers its 22lbs/ft trq after 0 lash of the pushrod.(nothing to do with preload of lifter), lifter preload with non- adj can only be done by either custom length p-rods or shimming the rock assembly stands.
b- on adjustables, no shimming needed, and past 0 lash, the rocker bolt has to be tightened to manufacturer specs. This could be 1/4 or 1/5 turn past or so (this has to be done hot).

It's shimming the rocker stands...not the springs. Shimming the springs will do nothing for the preload..it will only increase spring pressure.
