What does the MAP sensor do????

What does the MAP sensor do???? My daughters car (non LS1) may have an intermitant problem with the MAP sensor. The car will be running fine for a day or two and then it just dies. To make a long story short, after it dies, we wait a few minutes, tap on the MAP sensor and it starts. (took it to the dealer and showed the tech the part we tap on and he said it was the MAP sensor) They said a new one was $225 
This car is only worth about $750 and I'm not sure I want to spend that much....maybe a wrecking yard has one....

MAP sensor checks for intake manifold pressure and relays the information to the pcm, then the pcm adjusts fuel and spark according to the information it is given. You could try and junk yard or give your local auto parts store a try, normally they will be a lot cheaper than the dealer.

Well, its a 1993 Dodge colt. It has a tube running from the fuel rail to a small plastic box, about 1 .5 in sq. There is a 2 wire connector on it. The wires run into a wire harness.... The service tech said it was the MAP sensor and if bad could shut the car down. Funny thing is, after it has died (like turning of the key) wait a few minutes and tap the MAP sensor and it will start. Can it shut down the car if the readings are way off??

Well, I found this fromcartalk, but don't know if this could cause the engine to die...

Does it start every time after you tap on it, or could it be a coincidence? What engine does it have? Is the check engine light on? If so you can cycle the key off-on 3 times and it will read out the codes with the check engine light. It will blink x times, pause then blink x times. If it blinked 2 times then paused and blinked 4 times that would mean code 24. If it has multiple codes it will have a longer pause between them. If I remember right(its been a while) Dodge always started out and ended with a code 55.

Thanks for the replies. This is a long story, been going on for about a year now. Before the tapping fix it just had to sit for a while (hours) before it would start. Just happened to come across the tapping fix. It's been to the dealer several times, codes checked and cleared, changed out the distributer and a few odds and ends, $700 later, still have a problem. I don't have the car here to check the codes now as the car is at college (with daughter)....
